Step into the world of mid‑19th‑century craftsmanship at Graue Mill. In this month’s Homeschool Historians program, students will discover how artisans shaped daily life for families living in the rural community that eventually became modern‑day Oak Brook. From candle makers and blacksmiths to millers, weavers, and soap makers, skilled craftspeople were essential to the survival and comfort of frontier households.Students will learn how local artisans produced everyday necessities by hand, how their goods were traded or sold at general stores, and how these small enterprises supported the growing economy of early DuPage County. Families relied on these craftspeople not only for tools, household supplies, and food items, but also for services that kept farms and homesteads running smoothly.
During the program, young historians will try their own hands at traditional craftsmanship. They’ll dip candles—just as families once did to light their homes—and make beef tallow soap, a common household staple produced from materials available on local farms.
Ages 8–16. Cost: $10 per student.
