The Hattiesburg Zoo will welcome homeschool students and their families for a special series of Homeschool Days, held on the first Tuesday of each month from September through December. Designed to complement at-home learning with hands-on educational experiences, each program will explore a different conservation topic while giving students the opportunity to learn throughout the Zoo.
The fall 2026 Homeschool Days schedule includes:
Tuesday, September 1 — Conservation of Water
Tuesday, October 6 — Conservation of Land
Tuesday, November 3 — Conservation of Air
Tuesday, December 1 — Zoo Behind the Scenes
Each Homeschool Day will take place from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m., with gates opening exclusively for participating homeschool families at 8:30 a.m. The early admission gives students access to the Zoo one hour before it opens to the public and allows the Zoo’s education team additional time to engage participants in the morning’s activities.
Four interactive activity stations will be located throughout the Zoo, with each station featuring a unique task related to that month’s theme. Students can move through the stations at their own pace, allowing families the flexibility to explore, learn and participate together.
At 10:00 a.m., students, parents and teachers will gather at the Giraffe Pavilion for a special animal encounter. The morning will conclude with a Nature Swap from 10:00 to 10:30 a.m., where students are invited to bring and share unique nature-based finds and swap their treasures with fellow participants and Hattiesburg Zoo staff members.
Following the conclusion of the scheduled activities at 10:30 a.m., participating students and their families are welcome to remain at the Hattiesburg Zoo and enjoy the exhibits and attractions at their leisure.
“Homeschool Days give us an opportunity to turn the entire Zoo into a classroom,” said Jeremy Cumpton, Director of Wildlife. “Students can learn about important conservation topics through hands-on activities, animal encounters and conversations with our education team. We want them to leave each program with new knowledge, but also with greater curiosity about wildlife and the natural world around them.”
Advanced reservations are required for participation in Homeschool Days.
The cost is $15 per student, or $10 for students with a Hattiesburg Zoo annual pass. Admission for parents is $8, while parents with an annual Zoo pass may participate at no additional charge.
Annual passholders must present their valid passes at the ticket booth on the day of the program to receive the discounted admission
