730p DRIVE (dir by Nicolas Winding Refn, wri by Hossein Amini, w/ Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Oscar Isaac, Ron Perlman, Bryan Cranston, & Albert Brooks, Film District, 100mns, 2011, USA, 35mm)
There are a select handful of movies that have become Los Angeles classics. Nicolas Winding Refn’s violent, beautiful, operatic nocturnal crime romance film Drive earned Refn the 2011 Cannes Best Director award and immediately ascended to the top of the firmament.
The movie that in many ways has come to represent Ryan Gosling’s meteoric rise in cinema, Drive follows Gosling’s quiet nameless Driver- a movie stunt driver by day and getaway driver for criminals at night. He falls in love with Irene (Mulligan), a single mother, only to get involved in a crime gone very wrong when her criminal husband Standard (Oscar Isaac in one of his very first star-making roles) returns home. From there everything spirals out of control leading Driver on a collision course with LA gangster Bernie Rose (an unsettlingly dark Albert Brooks) and his hatchet man Nino (Ron Perlman-great as always).
Reportedly, Refn was driving around LA with Gosling in pre-production and broke down in tears as they listened to music and Refn looked at LA’s nocturnal skyline. The filmmaker realized the movie was about that very moment and experience-isolation, wanting to connect, violence.
Very few movies have so perfectly captured the intense beating musical heart of Los Angeles as Drive. Join us for an incredible 35mm screening followed by a true Los Angeles/cinema afterparty.

4p 35mm WHITE CHRISTMAS (dir by Michael Curtiz, w/Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, Vera Ellen, Paramount, 120mns, USA, 1954, 35mm)
Filmmaker Michael Curtiz could do it all so effortlessly. Casablanca, The Adventures of Robin Hood, Yankee Doodle Dandy. Here Curtiz, late in his career, crafts a frothy, holiday musical from what feels like spare parts from other movies. It’s like the director could make an expensive cadillac out of used car parts.
White Christmas uses the classic Hollywood structure of entertainers putting on shows to showcase a collection of Irving Berlin classic songs. Here the story follows World War II army buddies and later singing/dancing duo Bob Wallace (Crosby) and Phil Davis (Kaye). They become a much coveted entertaining team after the war and cross paths with up and coming sister act of Betty (Clooney) and Judy (Ellen) Haynes.
Romance and complications ensue with the quartet go to the Columbia Inn in Vermont to discover its owner is none other than General Waverly who commanded Bob and Phil in the war. And he’s about to go bankrupt. So what do you do?
You put on a show!
Shot in VistaVision, White Christmas became the biggest hit of 1954 and has endured for generations as an example of feel-good classic Hollywood holiday moviemaking.
Want to see a classic movie on 35mm in a movie palace? Join us, bring the family, and dream yourself a snowy White Christmas and cinema classic.
6p-645p Holiday Intermission — we'll have full bar, food, and concessions available.
645p IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE (co-wri & dir by Frank Capra, w/ Jimmy Stewart, Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore, Henry Travers, Gloria Grahame, Thomas Mitchell, Ward Bond, Paramount, 135mns, USA, 1946, 35mm)
As has become our annual tradition, we end the year with a 35mm screening of Frank Capra’s eternal holiday classic It’s A Wonderful Life. On a 35mm print. In a movie palace. With movielovers and moviemakers.
On the night of great crisis, angels from above review the life of hard working selfless George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart in his personal favorite movie role of his career). We see George go from boy to middle aged man and never leave his hometown of Bedford Falls. Instead, he always does the responsible thing, helps his neighbors, marries incredibly resourceful Mary (Reed), raises a family. But he’s also a thorn in the side of local richest man Mr. Potter (Barrymore) who wants to own and control the town and always finds George standing in his way.
When George, under great stress, considers killing himself so his family can get the insurance money, guardian angel Clarence (Travers) suddenly appears to show George what life would have been like had George never been born.
Not only one of the greatest (if not THE greatest) holiday movies of all time, It’s A Wonderful Life is one of the GREAT movies. Frank Capra and his team came up with a modern day A Christmas Carol structure that has one of the great third acts in all of cinema.
Powered by Capra’s 1930’s and 1940’s ensemble cast of great character actors, It’s A Wonderful Life is about the most important lesson of all-that people and kindness are the true currency of the world.
Join us for a great holiday movie and stay for a holiday party with movie lovers and movie makers.
