About this Event
Holiday Oddities 5: Let’s get Animated!
Holiday Oddities with Deserted Films, your local home movie archive, has become a December tradition at the Palm Springs Cultural Center. We know how to set the mood with weird holiday home movies and other moving images, and are honored and delighted to be part of your annual holiday celebration. Seriously. We think about this show ALL YEAR!
This year’s crop of holiday and locally made home movies is something to behold! And between those micro-masterpieces this year, we are adding a variety of wonderfully obscure holiday animations (robots! furry animals! creepy dolls!), midcentury newsreels (Lucy and Desi, beautiful Christmas light displays, how to buy toys...), and more! And that’s the recipe for 2026. It’s one part home movies and cartoons from our collection, one part rarely-screened, seldom-seen holiday goodies from our pals at UCLA Film & Television Archive, National Film Board of Canada, A/V Geeks, and others! It’s 100% fun! And, as always, Melissa and Devin of Deserted Films will guide you through the history and the hilarity.
Also, because we know folks are feeling it at the pump, at the checkout, and just generally, we have lowered ticket prices a bit this year. We want our mood-altering holiday efforts to be as accessible as possible!
DESERTED FILMS
Melissa Dollman and Devin Orgeron officially founded Deserted Films, a cultural memory archive and federally recognized 501(c)(3), in Palm Springs in 2022. They collect, care for and make accessible over 2,000 8mm, Super 8mm, and 16mm home movies, and more, created by locals and tourists to our area, that document Palm Springs, Coachella Valley, and Southern California more broadly. They have collector fever, so check out the 500+ digitized films and other ephemera on their website: https://desertedfilms.org/. They have presented educational — and entertaining, they hear! — programs to audiences in the Coachella Valley at such venues as: Palm Springs Cultural Center, Palm Springs Public Library, Modernism Week, Maleza, Salon for the Parched, Rotary of Indio, and other clubs.
