Yuppie Ben Stiller, Janeane Garofalo with baby bangs, peak 90s Winona Ryder and male manipulator Ethan Hawke walk into a Gen X cult classic. An occasionally cynical look at coming of age in the 90s, Stiller’s directorial debut REALITY BITES follows an adrift group of recent college graduates, as filmed by their friend and documentarian Lelaina Pierce (Ryder). Exploring themes of generational apathy, sexual liberation, and the throes of bohemian lifestyle during economic hardship, REALITY BITES reminds us that sometimes the best things in life are a Quarter-Pounder with cheese and a pack of Camel Straights. Starring a babyfaced group of Hollywood’s A list, this grungy nostalgic romp is a must see for those who will watch and say, “I remember those days”, and for those who will say, “Oh god, she’s just like me for real”.
