ABOUT OUR VENUES
The Caves is situated on a World Heritage Site deep in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town. These vaults, built in 1788, form the sub-structure of the South Bridge, and are packed with history. Originally intended to be used as business storage and workshops, things quickly descended into chaos, and by the turn of the century the area had become a renowned red-light district, home to illicit pubs and illegal whisky distilleries. There was once so much Whisky stored here that it became known as Whisky Row!
Every room has a story to tell and a special place in Scottish history – from vaults that served as the stables to the French Cavalry who were at one time bodyguards to the Royal Family, to remains of the houses that pre-date the Bridge itself – with the original terracotta floor tiles still intact! This amazing and fantastically unique venue will wow your guests.
This was also the site of Lucky Middlesmass’ Tavern and is mentioned in poems by Robert Ferguson. It was the watering hole for all the key figures in the Scottish Enlightenment, where they met as part of the Oyster Club, Rabbie Burns, David Hume, Adam Smith, Deacon Brodie, with visits from James Watt and Benjamin Franklin. Steeped in history and fabulously cosy this is a great venue for more personal events.
Please note that tickets include entry only. Arrival from 9.00pm with latest entry at 1.00am. Please anticipate queues, and note that there is no reserved seating. The Caves operates a smart dress code on Hogmanay. All ticket sales are final and non-refundable.
