Masons and non-Masons alike are welcome to attend a presentation by Worshipful Brother Dwight G. Tarrance Jr. on the History of Prince Hall Freemasonry. The lecture will provide an overview of Prince Hall. It will touch on the history of the man and the fraternity that he helped to found in 1784, including some brief and little known information about the 242-year old fraternity nationwide (1784), and its 161-years in Michigan (1865).The history of Prince Hall Freemasonry, a branch of North American Freemasonry, begins with the initiation of Prince Hall (c. 1735–1807) and 14 other African American men in British Military Lodge No. 441 (Boston, Mass.) on March 6, 1775. Nine years later on September 29, 1784, the Grand Lodge of England issued an official charter for a new lodge on American soil, the first African American lodge: African Lodge No. 459 (Boston, MA). The fraternity solidified when three African American lodges convened to establish the African Grand Lodge (aka African Grand Lodge No. 1) in December 1808, the first African American Grand Lodge, and founded under the leadership of Prince Hall. Later, in 1847, the African Grand Lodge changed its name to the Prince Hall Grand Lodge, in honor of their founding Grand Master.
