Our new exhibit, History is a Verb, celebrates the past 40 years on Iron Avenue. Not only do we look back at past exhibits and programs, we reflect on the community members, local leaders, residents and museum advisors that helped shape the vision for the Museum. For, the Museum’s story belongs to all who have supported it, shaped it, and have seen their own history reflected here. The Smoky Hill Museum opened on October 5, 1986, with more than 2,100 people attending. It was the opening day of a new chapter for the Museum, which had moved from the bathhouse in Oakdale Park to the old Post Office on Iron Avenue. A new mission focused on connecting people to the past while bringing history to life today.
As part of the exhibit, you are invited to share your favorite memory and hopes for the Museum in the future that will go in a time capsule to be opened on our 50th anniversary. Together, we will preserve the past, interpret the present, and build a foundation for the future.
Special thanks to our generous sponsors Dean & Debra Lewis and Nex-Tech.
