FEMINIST POLITICAL THOUGHT IN EAST CENTRAL EUROPE IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY: FEMINISM AND MARXISM IN SOCIALIST HUNGARY AND SELF-MANAGING YUGOSLAVIA
Zsófia Lóránd (University of Vienna)
How did feminist thinkers engage with Marxism and challenge the persistence of patriarchal relations within socialist societies? Zsófia Lóránd examines the often adversarial yet mutually transformative exchanges between feminism and socialism in East Central Europe.
Focusing on socialist Hungary and self-managing Yugoslavia, the lecture traces the connections between Marxist revisionism and emerging feminist critiques from the 1970s onwards. It considers Yugoslav interpretations of Ágnes Heller’s work alongside the writings of Nada Ler Sofronić, Blaženka Despot, and Nadežda Čačinovič. These intellectual exchanges offer new perspectives on the relationship between class and gender, the limits of state-sponsored emancipation, and Heller’s early thinking on women and the family.
Zsófia Lóránd is an Associate Professor in the Department of Contemporary History at the University of Vienna and is affiliated with the Research Center for the History of Political Transformations (RECET). She is the author of The Feminist Challenge to the Socialist State in Yugoslavia and Principal Investigator of the ERC-funded project HERESSEE on feminist political thought and women’s rights in East Central Europe.
