The Prague Branch of the German Historical Institute Warsaw (part of the Max Weber Foundation), together with Collegium Carolinum and the Leibniz Institute for the History and Culture of Eastern Europe (GWZO), in cooperation with the Czech Academy of Sciences through the joint Czech-German Research and Mediation Platform (GWZOPragueFLÚ) at its Institute of Philosophy, invites you to a public lecture hosted by the Faculty of Arts, Charles University.
The lecture is part of the Prague Histories Forum, a public lecture series bringing international scholars into dialogue with students, researchers, and the wider public. The winter semester 2026/27 programme explores Gender & Queer in East Central Europe.
QUEER HISTORIES AND AFFECTIVE ARCHITECTURES IN HUNGARY
Hadley Z. Renkin (Central European University, Vienna)
How do historically accumulated feelings shape queer belonging, relationships, and political action?
Hadley Z. Renkin traces the changing emotional landscapes of queer life in late socialist and postsocialist Hungary: from fear and connection under socialism to hopes of personal and political transformation after 1989, and subsequent experiences of disillusionment, shame, grief, and anger. Bringing sociological and anthropological approaches to emotions into dialogue with queer perspectives on history and disidentification, the lecture examines how feelings take shape within specific historical circumstances. Its concept of “affective architectures” explores how these accumulated experiences sustain complex, sometimes competing forms of queer identification, solidarity, and politics.
Hadley Z. Renkin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Gender Studies at Central European University, Vienna. His research examines Hungarian sexual politics, LGBTQ movements, and the intersections of sexuality with national and transnational belonging. He is co-editor of The Routledge Handbook of Sexuality in East Central Europe (2025).
