Springfield Preservation and Revitalization Council (SPAR) is hosting one of its Historic Springfield TreeWalks focused on Climate-Responsive Architecture, an engaging walking tour exploring how historic buildings were designed to respond to Florida’s environment.
During this outdoor program, participants will walk through the Springfield Historic District while learning how architectural design historically worked in harmony with Florida’s climate. Led by University of Florida School of Architecture lecturer and Jacksonville Historic Preservation Commission Chair Michael Montoya, the tour highlights how early builders used shade, ventilation, orientation, and materials to create comfortable homes long before modern air conditioning.
Along the route, attendees will examine distinctive historic houses and architectural details that reveal how climate considerations shaped building design in Northeast Florida. Participants will also discover how tree canopy, porches, windows, rooflines, and street layout worked together to create cooler and more livable neighborhoods.
As Florida communities face rising temperatures and growing environmental pressures, this tour offers insight into how traditional design strategies can inform more sustainable approaches today. Participants will gain a deeper appreciation for the environmental wisdom embedded within Springfield’s historic architecture.
Each of these 4 tours will feature ASL interpretation.
Funding for this program was provided through a grant from the Florida Humanities with funds from The Mosaic Company. Any views, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed in this program do not necessarily represent those of Florida Humanities or The Mosaic Company.
