THE 1834 JAIL

This is where New York's most dangerous criminals were held, tried, and condemned. Chester Gillette sat in these cells awaiting trial for the drowning murder of Grace Brown — a case so shocking it inspired Theodore Dreiser's novel *An American Tragedy*. Roxalana Druse was held here before becoming the last woman to be publicly hanged in New York State. Her execution was so horrifically botched that it led directly to the introduction of the electric chair. Visitors report shadowy figures moving between the cells and disembodied voices echoing through the corridors long after dark.

THE 1884 SUITER HOUSE

Once the site of medical examinations and autopsies connected to criminal trials at the jail next door, the Suiter House holds some of the most unsettling artifacts in the region. Among them is Roxalana Druse's rocking chair — which reportedly still moves on its own. A fragment of the original hanging rope remains in the building. Investigators have documented unexplained footsteps, sudden temperature drops, and voices with no source. The connection between these two buildings isn't just historical — it's paranormal.
