Come along to AKS from 6.15pm for coffee and home made cakes, second hand bookstall, raffle and the chance to meet our speaker as we are joined by Dr Jessica Clarke. Dr Jessica Clarke is an Early Career Research Associate at the Institute of Classical Studies in London. She has previously worked in the Greece and Rome Department of the British Museum, on field projects for Museum of London Archaeology, and held the Expert in Residence post at the Classical Association. She is also an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
In ‘Was Roman Theatre Really Roman? The Hidden History of Entertainment in Ancient Italy’ Jessica will explore how, for centuries, we have credited Rome with pioneering ancient entertainment in Italy but actually we need to put Italy’s real cultural trailblazers, Pompeii, Pietravairano, and a whole constellation of Italian cities and their magnificent theatres back in the spotlight. These venues were built generations before Rome constructed its own theatre, yet they have often been marginalised in scholarship and casually referred to as “Roman.” Once these sites are re-centred, they upend two centuries of early Roman history, revealing an Italy full of independent innovation.
