About this Event

Hi-Fi Night School Year Three - Global Studies

Join us September 17th as Global Studies continues with its fifth session, exploring music and cultures navigating periods of complexity and change. Set within our dedicated listening space, each gathering invites audiences to engage with music not just as sound, but as story, history, and shared human experience.

This next installment welcomes back Mathieu Schreyer, the French-born, Los Angeles-based DJ, producer, and KCRW music curator whose approach to collecting has always crossed borders. Having grown up between North Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and France, Mathieu brings a deeply personal perspective to global music, shaped by years of travel and an instinct for finding connections across genres, cultures, and generations.

Regionally inspired libations crafted by duo behind Vanessa and Alisa Catering

As always, all proceeds from the evening will benefit local schools.

Session Five | North Africa | Mathieu Schreyer

September 17th

For this program, Mathieu Schreyer will guide us through the music of North Africa, exploring a region shaped by centuries of cultural exchange, migration, and reinvention. Moving across eras and styles, the session will trace connections between traditional forms and modern sounds, revealing how music has carried regional identities forward while continually absorbing new influences.

Born in France, Mathieu spent much of his childhood moving throughout North Africa, the Middle East, and Asia before eventually settling in Los Angeles in 1995. A dedicated record collector and DJ, he became known through his work at KCRW, where his wide-ranging selections moved freely between African music, jazz, soul, funk, reggae, hip-hop, electronic music, and discoveries from around the world. His approach has always been less about genre than feeling, using records to create a journey between seemingly distant sounds.

Part personal history and part cultural exploration, the session looks at North African music as a meeting point between places, traditions, and generations. Drawing from the music Mathieu encountered growing up and decades spent collecting records, the evening explores how sound can preserve memory while traveling beyond borders—changing along the way, yet remaining connected to the people and cultures from which it emerged.

The System

This session will be centered around the Klipsch La Scala AL6 horn speakers.  A favorite of ours for their tonal purity and effortless presentation. They will be powered through Accuphase’s Flagship A-300 Monoblock amplifiers. Operating entirely in class A, these amps deliver massive drive, clarity, and remarkable holography. For analog playback, we’re returning to the Accuphase C-2900 preamplifier and AD-2900 phono stage to ensure both mono and stereo performance are at their finest.  Miyajima cartridges from Japan, mounted on our Kuzma Dual Arm XL DC Turntable round out the setup.
