About this Event
Through tracing stories of individuals buried in Burnaby and the evolution of local cemeteries, this event in the "Beyond Pender" series will explore how migration, citizenship rights, and permanent settlement shaped these spaces of remembrance.
Learn about the early bachelor society, the historic practice of returning remains to ancestral villages in China, and how changing rights after the Second World War influenced cemetery policies, practices, and design, such as the development of family plots and memorial spaces.
You’ll also gain insight into cultural traditions that continue today, including Qingming, the Double Ninth Festival, and funeral processions connecting cemeteries with Chinatown and benevolent associations. The talks will be followed by a Q&A, offering an opportunity to ask questions, share perspectives, and connect with others.
