Join us this Sunday for the Opening Concert of the Dottie Thompson Concert Series with Hentus Van Rooyen, former organist of Christ the King. Dr. Hentus van Rooyen, a native of South Africa, is an organist, conductor, and teacher based in Portland, Maine. He serves as Director of Music Ministries and Organist at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, Cape Elizabeth, ME, and teaches organ at Bowdoin College, the University of Southern Maine, and for the Young Organists Collaborative. He has performed in venues across the United States, South Africa, Russia, and Italy.
As conductor, Hentus was recently appointed as Artistic director of Aurora Camerata, Maine’s premier Early Music Ensemble. He also serves as the Artistic Director of Coastal Chorale, and is the chorusmaster for the Portland Symphony Orchestra’s Magic of Christmas Chorus.
Hentus holds the Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees in organ performance and Early Music from the University of North Texas. His other degrees in organ performance, pedagogy, and church music were completed at the University of Pretoria and the University of South Africa. He has studied organ performance with Jesse Eschbach and Wim Viljoen, and baroque repertoire studies with Paul Leenhouts.
Prior appointments include serving as Assistant Professor of Music, Sacred Music Coordinator and College Organist at Bethany College in Lindsborg KS; Director of Music and Organist at Christ Episcopal Cathedral in Salina, KS; and Assistant Organist at Christ the King Catholic Church, Dallas, TX.
