Course Description:
The Seating Foundations Course equips clinicians with the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to provide effective and client-centered seating and mobility interventions at the beginner and intermediate level. The course guides learners in understanding how mobility goals, postural needs, and propulsion principles shape wheelchair prescription. Participants will explore ADP manual and power wheelchair categories, model specific characteristics, and funding eligibility criteria to support informed clinical decision making.
Through hands-on practice with MAT assessments, learners will develop confidence in identifying postural presentations, taking essential measurements, and interpreting findings to guide equipment selection. Case-based learning will reinforce clinical reasoning for selecting seating products and manual or power mobility, helping clinicians make informed seating and mobility decisions that optimize comfort, participation, and client outcomes.
Learning Objectives:
1. Appraise how mobility goals, postural needs, propulsion principles, and therapeutic listening collectively shape wheelchair prescription decisions to optimize client outcomes.
2. Understand how Assistive Devices program (ADP) manual wheelchair categories, model-specific characteristics, and ADP eligibility criteria inform evidence-based wheelchair prescription decisions.
3. Evaluate how in-wheelchair postural presentation, MAT assessment findings, and interpretation of essential body measurements together inform appropriate seating and sizing decisions in clinic wheelchair prescription.
4. Understand how spinal and pelvic postures, reducible and non-reducible positioning needs, MAT assessment findings, and seating product concepts guide clinical seating decisions for support, function, and pressure redistribution.
5. Determine how appropriateness for power mobility, ADP eligibility criteria, model specific features, and power seating functions guide clinical decisions in prescribing power wheelchairs.

Speaker Bio
Cathy Choi is an occupational therapist who is passionate about working with adults in complex seating and mobility. Cathy has over 25 years of experience as a seating and mobility authorizer with the Assistive Devices Program of Ontario, and is dual certified as an Assistive Technology Professional and Seating and Mobility Specialist by the Rehabilitation Engineering Society of North America (RESNA). As an educator, she is Chair of RESNA’s Education Committee, has presented workshops at the Canadian Seating and Mobility Conference and webinars with CAOT and OSOT, and is a sessional co-instructor at the University of Toronto Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy.
