About this Event
Experience an early 1800s Christmas at Travellers Rest and discover how the holidays were celebrated before Christmas trees and Santa Claus became traditions!
Christmas was a time of celebration for both the Overton family and the enslaved people who lived and worked at Travellers Rest, though their experiences were vastly different. Learn how the holiday was observed by people living on the same property but under very different circumstances. This program offers a meaningful opportunity to compare and contrast their experiences while exploring the history of Christmas in early Tennessee.
Enjoy a tour of the historic house decorated with early 19th-century holiday decorations, learn the Virginia Reel, sample a historic treat called syllabub, and create your own Victorian gift cone to take home!
