Grades K–1
Calling all little monsters! Our youngest scientists will spend the day exploring the creatures and legends of Halloween night. They’ll discover what makes bats the only mammals that can truly fly, find out what an animal’s teeth say about its diet, learn about the important jobs blood does in our bodies, and see how plants grow (and why garlic is said to keep vampires away!). Along the way, they’ll make a bat glider, a set of monster teeth, a batch of spooky fake blood and a garlic planter to take home.
Grades 2–4
Things are getting glowy and ghostly! Participants will investigate the science behind the spookiest sights of the season, from eerie glowing light to “ghostly” forces you can’t see. They’ll learn how light and energy make things glow, what happens to polymers when they’re heated, and how scientists can explain movement that might seem paranormal. Hands-on projects include glow-in-the-dark paint, spooky shrinky dink charms and a Pepper’s Ghost illusion that makes a figure appear to float in mid-air.
