==============================
Fort William Henry was built in 1755 at the southern tip of Lake George to guard the frontier between the French in Canada and the British colonies. In August 1757, the French general Montcalm arrived with around 8,000 soldiers, militia and Native American allies. After six days of bombardment, Lieutenant Colonel George Monro surrendered on honourable terms. As his garrison marched out, the column was attacked. The French then burned the fort to the ground, and it lay abandoned for almost two hundred years.
When archaeologists excavated the site in the 1950s, they uncovered the remains of soldiers who had died of disease and wounds. The fort was rebuilt on that very ground.
Fort William Henry has been investigated by SyFy's Ghost Hunters, who recorded a male voice and heavy footsteps where no living person could have been walking. Guides describe The Limper, whose uneven footsteps move through empty rooms, and The Slammer, who shuts doors in their faces. In the dungeon, once the field hospital, a shadowy figure has been reported. In the powder magazine, a voice has been heard telling visitors to leave.
Much of the fort is unheated and Lake George is cold in November, so dress warmly.
