The Harvard Music Department presents the Harvard New Music Ensemble in the final performance of its inaugural year, featuring a live composition by Tyshawn Sorey and world premieres of works by Mari Kimura and Tariq Al-Sabir (commissioned for the ensemble by Professor Claire Chase). Mari Kimura’s Dinner is Ready features Kimura’s innovative MUGIC® motion sensors, which use the gestures of performers to control the production and live manipulation of electronic sounds. Tariq Al-Sabir’s Parting/yeah features the composer on vocals and combines notated and orally guided music to explore the space between disappointments and opportunities. Student guest performers from around the Boston area will join HNME for a rendition of Tyshawn Sorey’s Autoschediasms, a live composition created using Prof. Sorey’s original conducted improvisation method. Tariq Al-Sabir’s commission is supported by the Harvard University Committee on the Arts. The concert will be on December 2 at 8 pm in Paine Hall at Harvard University. Admission is free and open to the public with Harvard ID or proof of Covid vaccination.
