Come enjoy some refreshments while touring one of Portland's few certified Net Zero Carbon buildings. Learn how we uplifted this 1939 Art Deco building to highlight adaptive reuse and high-performance construction, while using responsibly sourced and non-toxic materials. This architecture office meticulously employees every inch of its 577 square feet to fit eight staff members. The project aimed to pull back the curtain on resilient construction and low embodied carbon materials. The tour will highlight the successful and not-so-successful results of experimenting with novel materials. We will also discuss the process of achieving one of Green Building Initiative's (GBI) first Net Zero Carbon certifications in the nation.
Materials typically buried in building assemblies are exposed as design elements. The creative use of salvaged materials and the playful color scheme have generated curiosity and joy in the neighborhood, providing an opportunity for engagement. The interior design employs non-toxic materials, a warm color palette and biophilic elements to create a soothing workspace atmosphere. The end result is simultaneously a workplace, laboratory, and neighborhood artifact—a small building demonstrating the delight, resilience, and the architectural possibility of doing more with less.
