Inspired by the vibrant “Happy Fruit Hat” featured in "Beyond the Brim: Tales Told Through the Hats We Wore", join beloved Ottawa drag performer and community builder China Doll (he/him) for a playful, hands-on workshop. Create your own beginner-friendly fruit headpiece while China Doll shares stories about drag, humour, self-expression, and the personal story behind his iconic Carmen Miranda-inspired creation. Museum admission is included, giving you the opportunity to explore "Beyond the Brim" and see the original “Happy Fruit Hat” created by Ed Kwan (aka China Doll) on display. Light refreshments will be served.

Meet the artist: China Doll (he/him) is the drag persona of beloved Ottawa-based performance artist, community builder, and karaoke impresario Ed Kwan. Born in Ottawa and raised in Chinatown, Ed brings pop culture and humour to China Doll’s costumes and performances, spreading love, joy, and laughter while opening conversations about queer identity and culture.

- This workshop is delivered in English.

- The workshop will take place in a heritage space on the ground floor of the museum.
- “Beyond the Brim” is located on the second floor and is only accessible by stairs. A visual aid is available for those unable to visit the special exhibition. The primary exhibition can be explored on the first floor.

Venez rejoindre China Doll (il/lui), artiste drag et bâtisseur de communauté bien-aimé d’Ottawa, lors d’un atelier ludique et pratique inspiré de l’exubérant chapeau « Happy Fruit» (fruit heureux), mis en vedette dans Plus qu’un chapeau : Les histoires des chapeaux que nous portons. Façonnez votre propre coiffe aux accents fruités dans le cadre d’un atelier accessible aux débutants et aux débutantes, tandis que China Doll livre ses confidences sur le drag, l’humour, l’expression de soi et l’histoire personnelle qui se cache derrière sa création emblématique inspirée de Carmen Miranda.
L’admission au musée est comprise, vous offrant ainsi l’occasion de plonger dans Plus qu’un chapeau et d’admirer le chapeau « Happy Fruit » original créé par Ed Kwan (alias China Doll), exposé dans toute sa splendeur. Des rafraîchissements seront également servis.

À propos de l’artiste : China Doll (il/lui) est le personnage de drag bien-aimé d’Ed Kwan, artiste de scène établi à Ottawa, bâtisseur de communauté et imprésario du karaoké. Natif d’Ottawa et élevé dans le quartier chinois, Ed insuffle à China Doll une culture pop pétillante et un humour désarmant, semant l’amour, la joie et le rire tout en ouvrant le dialogue sur l’identité et la culture queer.

- L’atelier se déroulera dans un espace patrimonial au rez-de-chaussée du musée.
- L’exposition Plus qu’un chapeau est présentée au deuxième étage du musée et n’est accessible que par un escalier. Un support visuel sera proposé aux personnes qui ne peuvent pas s’y rendre. L’exposition principale peut être visitée au rez-de-chaussée.
