Celebrate Hanukkah with a rollicking klezmer concert at the Jazzschool, presented by legendary Bay Area klezmer trio Veretski Pass. Dust off your dancing shoes and come ready to move to the driving rhythms of traditional Jewish, Ukrainian, and Polish music, as well as original compositions and spirited improvisations in the klezmer tradition.
Drawing on centuries-old Eastern European traditions, Veretski Pass offers a unique and exciting combination of virtuosic musicianship and raw energy that has excited audiences internationally for more than two decades.
Instrumental in co-creating the “klezmer revival,” a movement which began in the 1970s with the goal of reviving Eastern European Jewish music, the band has performed and recorded hundreds of pieces of Jewish music, drawing on a vast array of sources, including contemporary and 19th-century ethnographic collections.
Performing on original instruments in an unbound, energetic “village style,” Veretski Pass has not only preserved, but reimagined, recomposed, and rearranged Jewish music from Ukraine, Poland, Carpathian-Ruthenia, Bessarabia, and Romania, enhancing and enriching modern klezmer music.
