The Historical Association of Lewiston is pleased to present Heidi Truschel-Light for our October program: “Handling Mules on the Erie Canal” at 7:00 PM Thursday, October 22 at the Lutheran Church of the Messiah Fellowship Hall, 915 Oneida Street in Lewiston. The Erie Canal is a celebrated part of New York’s history, but a large part of the canal’s operation has disappeared from memory and records. Little is known about how mules were handled on the Erie Canal. While locks are restored, canal-side buildings are preserved, and museum exhibits have been created, the presence of mules has been erased. Boaters on today’s canal can relive the journey and visit the towns that sprang up across New York state without ever seeing a sign of what the towpath was created to do.
Heidi will inform us what walking the towpath was like in the late nineteenth century. The Union Sun & Journal reporter Heidi Truschel-Light, who researched the use of mules on the canal as part of writing about Niagara County’s celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Erie Canal, will show photos and discuss what was involved in working with a mule named Sal.
This community event is free and open to all. Donations are greatly appreciated to help support our museum. Refreshments will be served. Join us to enjoy Heidi’s presentation on the 200-year-old area historic sight.
