About this Event
San José Symphonic Choir opens its 102nd season with Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus, a dramatic oratorio inspired by the story of the Maccabean revolt.
Following the death of his father, Judas Maccabaeus takes up the fight to defend his people and restore their freedom. Handel traces the story from mourning and uncertainty through battle, victory, and ultimately, celebration.
First performed in London in 1747, Judas Maccabaeus became one of Handel’s most popular works, filled with memorable arias and magnificent choruses, including the beloved “See, the Conqu’ring Hero Comes!”
For this performance, San José Symphonic Choir is joined by the San Jose Baroque Orchestra and a wonderful lineup of returning soloists:
Brian Thorsett, tenor
Christian Pursell, baritone
Kayla Wilfong, soprano
Gabriela Estephanie Solís, mezzo-soprano
We invite you into this remarkable story of courage, triumph and hope, carried by Handel’s unmistakable music, building from quiet reflection to a glorious burst of celebration!
