Handcraft a Traditional Besom couple or group experience VARIOUS DATES

Prepare to cross an important life threshold (e.g marriage, or moving home) by handcrafting your own besom/ broom. Various dates/ times
About this Event

This is a private experience to be booked either by an individual, couple, or for a party of up to 8 people. One high quality traditional besom (aka a round-headed broom) will be made (and decorated if desired) during the workshop, to take away.

During the workshop, you will learn skills in green woodworking as we use the shave horse and draw knife to strip the bark from the broom handle. The feel of the bark as it peels so easily off the handle is incredibly satisfying! We'll each sort and gather bunches of birch twigs for the broom head, and learn how to bind it securely onto the handle. The handle can be decorated with ribbons, or by burning into the wood using a technique called pyrography.

By taking part in this workshop you'll be helping to revive an ancient but now rare craft practice. Besom making is currently ranked as 'critically endangered' on the Heritage Crafts Red List, because of a dwindling number of people who still have the skils or knowledge to make them. During the workshop you'll hear about the old traditions of Besom-making and why it became a lost art.

The besom is a symbol of sweeping away the old or unwanted, and crossing the threshold into a new life. It could be a great way for a couple to prepare for a Jumping the Besom ritual during a wedding or handfasting ceremony, or a fun thing to do with friends for an alternative hen, stag or 'st-en'-do. It could be gifted as a group experience if a friend is moving away or preparing to embark on a new adventure in life, or for someone who has recovered from illness or simply for just simply because you need a bit more broomstick in your life! Please get in touch to arrange your desired date.

This workshop is designed and led by Celebrant Joy Justice of Rooted Ceremonies. Joy also designs and hosts bespoke ceremonies for couples and individuals to mark various life passages.

All materials are harvested sustainably onsite or from local woodlands.

Drinks and home-made snacks will be provided.
