The film dramatises the family life of William Shakespeare and his wife Agnes Hathaway as they cope with the death of their 11-year-old son Hamnet.
The strain on William & Agnes' marriage reaches a climax when William writes & stages a play, Hamlet. Agnes is offended by the use of the name Hamlet and travels to London, where she sees the play and realises it is actually a tribute to their late son.
