Join in for an ecological restoration weekend at Stronghold Castle in Oregon, IL, on Halloween weekend: Friday, October 30-November 1, 2026!
Help restore a secret hilltop prairie and the surrounding woodland for future designation of the land as a Nature Preserve and Land and Water Reserve. Open to folks 18 and up. No experience necessary! Tools and gloves will be provided. We'll work to remove invasive shrubs and clear burn breaks for an upcoming prescribed burn to bring health and vitality back to this important ecosystem on a bluff near the Rock River.
Volunteers may attend for part of the weekend or the whole weekend starting at 4 pm on Friday to 1 pm on Sunday. Our workdays will be on Saturday, October 31 (9 am-3 pm) and Sunday, November 1 (10 am-12 pm), if weather allows. We will have Halloween activities on the evening of October 31st. Please note that you have to attend the volunteer portion of Saturday to be a part of the other events and to stay overnight.
Housing is available to participants for no charge on Friday and Saturday nights. There will be a meal of breakfast burritos (vegetarian and gluten-free options) provided and others will be potluck style or bring-your-own. To reserve your overnight space, we are asking for a $15 deposit that will go toward a breakfast meal prepared by Stronghold. The deposit is non-refundable, but is a tax-deductible donation to Stronghold. We will send you the link where you can complete your registration.
Stronghold Castle hosts 340 beautiful, wooded acres of undeveloped land along the Rock River. Due to the terrain and nature of the work, the age minimum for the work weekend is 18. If you have questions, please email [email protected].
