The Grape in Ventura calls itself the House of Jazz and Spirits, and this Halloween it lives up to every word. For one haunted Saturday, the room becomes a vintage picture house with a matinee and a late feature, as Tony Ybarra raises two guitar legends from the past.

Spirits of Jazz — Wes Montgomery: Legend of the Thumb

Día de los Muertos teaches that the departed come home when they are remembered. So before the sun goes down, we light the candles on the altar and call back one of the most soulful guitarists who ever lived.
Wes didn't touch a guitar until he was nearly twenty, when the records of Charlie Christian stopped him cold. He taught himself by ear in Indianapolis, working long factory days and practicing deep into the night. To keep peace with the neighbors, he set the pick aside and played with his thumb. What began as courtesy became a voice: round, warm, impossibly human. Once Cannonball Adderley heard him in a local club, the world soon followed, and those ringing octaves still set the standard guitarists chase today.

When the sun goes down, the spell begins.
Carlos Santana stirred blues, rock, and Latin rhythm into something nobody had a name for yet. His band walked onto the Woodstock stage in 1969 as unknowns and walked off as legends. With hits like Black Magic Woman, Evil Ways and Oye Como Va, the guitar transformed in Santana's hands into something darker and more seductive.
Tonight that music returns on Spanish guitars, with Latin jazz heat and the Black Magic Reinas flamenco dancers casting their own spell. Enter the realm of magic and let the darkness lead you to the rhythms and light.
Come for the matinee, stay for the late feature, or haunt us for both. Costumes encouraged. Spirits served.
