Celebrate Filipino American History Month and join the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center for a guided tour of How Can You Forget Me: Filipino American Stories, an exhibition exploring the overlooked history of a trailblazing Filipino community in California from the 1910s through the 1970s.
At the heart of the exhibition are three of twenty-six steamer trunks discovered in 2005. Preserved by the Legionarios del Trabajo, a Filipino fraternal organization, the trunks contain the personal belongings of community members whose stories might otherwise have been lost to history. Decades later, these remarkable time capsules offer a rare glimpse into the lives, aspirations, and resilience of Filipinos who helped build Little Manila in Stockton, California, once home to the largest Filipino community outside the Philippines.
Featuring more than fifty artifacts from the recovered trunks, alongside objects loaned by Stockton's Filipino American community, How Can You Forget Me illuminates a rich history of migration, labor, mutual aid, and belonging. Discover how these individuals helped shape California's agricultural industry and paved the way for future generations of Filipino Americans.
