About this Event

It's an astonishing and beautiful idea, that the unseen exists, a world just beyond our reach. Five years ago Rory MacLean set out on a path with no idea where it would lead or how long it would take, and no idea that it would change his life forever. He traced humanity's ideas of the afterlife across history and around the globe, seeking out the places where the veil is thin: he spent a night on Jacob's Rock, watched gods walk on fire in Kerala, sundanced with the Lakota on the Great Plains and laid his hand on the stepping stone to another world at Jerusalem's Temple Mount. In Delhi he was told the universe would keep sending loving souls to guide him, and it did, until, in five truly inexplicable moments, Katrin was beside him.

Geography of Heaven: Travels to the Hereafter is the story of that journey, held together by the latest neuroscience on grief, and it is a travel book like no other, one that leaves you with the feeling that none of us are created for naught. Rory will be in conversation with photographer, author and women's rights champion My-Linh Kunst, and we're so pleased to be sharing this evening with the American Women's Club of Berlin.

About Rory MacLean: Rory MacLean is the author of more than a dozen books, including the UK top tens Stalin's Nose and Under the Dragon, and Berlin: Imagine a City, a book of the year which the Washington Post called "the most extraordinary work of history I've ever read". He has won awards from the Canada Council and Arts Council England, held a Winston Churchill Travelling Fellowship, and been nominated for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. His work has been translated into a dozen languages. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and curator of the Sherborne Travel Writing Festival, he divides his time between the UK, Berlin and Palermo.

About My-Linh Kunst: My-Linh Kunst uses leadership, storytelling and photography to champion women's rights worldwide. Born in Vietnam, she emigrated to the US after the Vietnam War, studied at UVA and Wharton, and spent nearly twenty years in senior management consulting before moving into non-profit governance. Based in Berlin, she has served as President of FAWCO, a UN-accredited NGO, and leads the American Women's Club of Berlin. Her books Beyond Borders and Hope is a Thing of Feathers give a platform to remarkable women, survivors of human trafficking and frontline changemakers.

About the American Women's Club of Berlin: Founded in 1894, the AWC Berlin is a nonprofit, nonpartisan social and cultural network with a charitable calling, bringing women together to share experiences, make friends and empower others along the way.
