Grief & Relief, a Staged Reading and Collaborative Workshop Series composed of selections from a series of original plays and creative non-fiction works written by Rhode Island Artist, Kira Hawkridge, is preparing to go on tour this Fall.
Hawkridge has been the Artistic Director of OUT LOUD Theatre since 2012 and is currently a Creative Writing Graduate Student with The Newport MFA at Salve Regina University. These text and movement driven works written by Hawkridge explore her experiences with chronic illness, dynamic disability, and complex forms of grief/loss. Rooted in magical realism and Hawkridge’s signature ensemble based practices, Grief & Relief is a true blend of practical application and artistic theory - of scholarship and embodied knowledge alike.

“My path as a person, a partner, and an artist drastically shifted overnight,” says Hawkridge “and then over many, many years that were to follow. Chronic health conditions can feel all encompassing and continually shifting, but I have found the nature of that shifting to often be as beautiful as it can be difficult. In my experience, the navigation of these conditions has never been just one thing. My personal relationship with illness and grief continue to be neither static nor easily defined. This project at its core is an embodiment of that complexity, an offering of not only my own lens, but hopefully of a pathway for a communal moment of grief and of relief for audiences - whatever that may mean to you - an environment for duality to be welcomed and held with reverence, with humor, with heart, and with intention. I hope to create an authentic space where in sharing my own experiences, it might encourage someone else to feel less alone in their own journey, regardless what that journey might entail or where one might be within its path.”

Grief & Relief will kick off with Staged Reading Performances at Machines with Magnets on Monday September 28th, as220 on Sunday October 25th, and Riffraff Bookstore + Bar on Saturday November 21st - all at 7:30pm. Collaborative Workshops will be held in October and November (dates/times and locations to be announced) and Guest Readers will be announced preceding each Staged Reading and Collaborative Workshop. In addition, Grief & Relief’s first College/University Workshop collaboration will be held at Salve Regina University in partnership with Salve Dance. Salve Dance students will collaborate on workshopping one of Hawkridge’s original productions, one that incorporates high levels of expressive movement and non-verbal/physical forms of storytelling.

“Concentrated tours are powerful forms of energy exchange," says Hawkridge. "They create a momentum and build upon the communities that have poured their time and attention into a central work. It’s surreal to be bringing so many of my passions together into one singular experiment - touring, community building, disability and illness advocacy, writing, performance, and the ability to share and reflect on creative processes. I feel thrilled to share this work and grateful to the Rhode Island community for welcoming me back with such open arms.”
