The History of Gressenhall
The history of Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse is one of hardship, discipline and survival. Built in 1777, this imposing Norfolk site has witnessed centuries of human suffering, earning its place as one of the most historically significant and reportedly haunted workhouses in England.
Following the Poor Law Amendment Act, Gressenhall was transformed into a Union Workhouse where conditions became harsher and more controlled. Families were separated on arrival, and inmates were forced into hard, repetitive labour such as farming, laundry work and oakum picking, often under strict supervision and minimal comfort.
Life inside the workhouse was deliberately rough. Punishments included isolation and confinement in dark cells. Hundreds of men, women and children passed through its doors, many enduring years of hardship.
Gressenhall closed as a workhouse in 1948 before later becoming a care home. In 1976 it reopened as a museum. Today, visitors can explore original rooms including the laundry, living quarters and chapel
