Scenes from The Rehearsal of Philoctetes
2016–2026
Video Installation (three monitors)
Duration: TBD
Philoctetes by Sophocles––After abandoning the wounded Philoctetes on a deserted island, Odysseus returns ten years later with young Neoptolemus to retrieve the legendary archer whose bow could win the Trojan War, forcing them to confront the moral cost of deception, the weight of betrayal, and the choice between victory and integrity.
The Rehearsal of Philoctetes––When a filmmaker abandons an actor playing Philoctetes on an isolated Chicago water filtration crib, a crew must retrieve him and convince him to finish the film - only to find that the ancient tragedy they’re staging is becoming entangled with their own artistic doubts, moral dilemmas, and the director’s increasingly desperate methods.
Scenes from an in-progress edit of The Rehearsal of Philoctetes––I reluctantly abandoned this film when I left for Rome ten years ago. Now, having returned to Chicago, I find myself in the midst of assembling the work. In these times, amid the country’s tense sociopolitical climate, returning to this film has been both a joy and a struggle. I am deeply grateful to the actors, crew, and all those who gave their time to bring this film to life, as well as for their patience. Their generosity and energy are the wind that will ultimately carry this project to realization. Coincidentally, my abandonment of the material, and my return to this strange land in these strange times, seem to reflect the emotional state of Philoctetes when he asks:
“Are you, as well as I, a sufferer? And angry?”— Marco G. Ferrari
BIOGRAPGHY
Marco G. Ferrari (b. 1974) is an artist based in Chicago, Illinois and Rome, Italy. He builds films, installations, digital images, video projection performances and music that explore our relationships with place and time, to probe how identity is shaped by tensions raised by our attachments to or de-attachments from our built and natural environments. Upholding a`cinema of imperfection' that reveals the materiality of the image, Ferrari’s work seeks to move beyond a perceived transparent reality to a place of visual plasticity and sublime emotional experience. Screenings of his films have been exhibited in the Italian Pavilion at the 54th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale; the Galleria d’Arte Moderna–Palazzo Forti; Grafiche Aurora in Verona, Italy; the Spanish Academy and Cinema Aquila in Rome; Athens International Film and Video Festival in Ohio: the Chicago Cultural Center, and the University of Chicago Delhi Center in India.
Ferrari received his MFA from the University of Chicago in Visual Arts and his BA from DePaul University in Communication and Italian Studies. He currently balances his studio practice as
Assistant Professor of Cinematography in the School of Theatre, Dance & Film at Illinois State University and as curator of the Virginio and Marisa Ferrari Arts Foundation.
