Did you know that the Quw’utsun/Cowichan Watershed is home to the largest Great Blue Heron nesting colony on Vancouver Island? These beautiful, pterodactyl-like birds have been listed as a Species-of-Special-Concern in BC for almost 30 years and their wellbeing is an important indicator for watershed health.
Join us at our next Speakers Night to learn about the significance, biology, and life history of the Great Blue Heron—with a special focus on the Cowichan Bay heronry!
Learn more about our speakers ⬇️:
Trudy Chatwin was the Endangered Species biologist for Vancouver Island for 23 years. Ever since Great Blue Herons were listed as a Species-of-Special Concern, she has worked on monitoring populations across Vancouver Island. She still volunteers with Connie Haist, Madelaine Greey, and many other heron-enthusiasts to study these beautiful, pterodactyl-like birds and contribute important data about their health and wellbeing to the Province of BC.
This Speakers Series is hosted by the Cowichan Watershed Board, with the support of VIU Cowichan and funding from the Watershed Security Fund.
