The pantry has range. Sometimes the ingredients we know best are the ones that can still surprise us.GRANDMA’S HANDS: The Pantry Has Range is the second class in Make It Do What It Do, a hands-on cooking series with Chef Phil Jones and The Black Food Project.
We’ll turn black-eyed peas and rice into savory cakes, build a curry-onion gravy, work with collards, and bring the plate to life with a bright pepper-vinegar relish. Along the way, we’ll get into texture, seasoning, and the little decisions that turn familiar pantry staples into a meal you’re proud to put on the table.
Come ready to work with the food, taste what you’re making, and share a plant-forward light supper. You’ll take home a Pantry Supper Kit so the learning can keep going in your own kitchen.
Chef Phil Jones is a Detroit chef, food educator, founder of The Black Food Project, and the 2021 Detroit Free Press/Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers Chef of the Year.
