Our September general meeting features Alex Scharnberg, presenting "West African Riverine Cichlids (a buyer's guide)."We'll also have our usual BAP and AHAP turn-ins, member door prize, dry goods raffle, and mini-auction.
Alex Scharnberg has been keeping freshwater fish since his dad got him his first 5-gallon tank when he was 8 years old. He moved up to a 10-gallon and got his first pair of Pelvicachromis pulcher (the common Krib). After keeping many types of freshwater fish, his loyalty to Pelvicachromis has led him to specialize in West African Riverine Cichlids, and the genus Pelvicachromis, leading him to breed all the species of the genus and many others.
His passion for the genus lead him to join a collecting trip with the West African Cichlid group to Cameroon in February 2026 to observe and collect them personally. His presentation will include photos and videos from this trip.
Besides Westies, he grows over 500 tropical plants, majority being orchids, with Begonias, Aroids, Bromeliads and other tropicals in his sunroom and over 70 roses in his gardens. Additionally, he keeps 5 pairs of native colubrid snakes and 7 tarantulas.
When he is not working on his living hobbies, he is teaching 6th grade science in Charlotte, NC, and running the Nature Lab at Camp Mondamin, outside Asheville NC in the summers. He also enjoys hiking, collecting Catawba and Cherokee Native pottery, cooking and attending concerts and shows.
