THE EVENT STANDARD

The GORUCK Battle of the 3 Miler is a structured endurance event based on the traditional British Army Infantry fitness test.

This event shifts the standard backyard ultra format into a load-bearing challenge. Athletes are required to maintain a consistent physical output under strict combat-simulation loads, enduring the unique physiological demands of winter weather, freezing temperatures, and extended periods of darkness.

EVENT FORMAT & RULES

• The Lap: A new 3-mile route starts every hour, on the hour.

• The Cut-off: You must complete the lap and return to the starting corral within 60 minutes. If you miss the hourly whistle, you are out. No excuses.

• The Outcome: Finishers must complete all consecutive laps within their division (solo/relay). Placement on the leaderboard is determined by cumulative running time across all completed laps.

• The Patch: To reward physical execution and grit, every single athlete receives the official event patch just for crossing the start line at Lap 1.

OFFICIAL EQUIPMENT & INTEGRITY RULES

• Backpacks Provided: All official backpacks and weights will be provided on-site by GORUCK to guarantee a uniform competitive standard.

• Tamper-Evident Seals: Race staff apply tamper-evident seals to weight compartments before the start. If a seal is broken, cut, or altered, the athlete or team is instantly disqualified.

• No Pack Removal: The backpack cannot leave the person's back at any point during a live lap.

• No Outside Assistance: Competitors cannot be assisted with their backpack by anyone else (crew, teammates, or spectators) while out on the course.

• Random Inspections: Weight and seal checks will be conducted at random by race staff at any point before, during, or after laps. Any pack found underweight results in immediate DQ.

WINTER LOGISTICS & EVENT ADMIN

• Mandatory Head Torch: Because the event kicks off at 08:00, Lap 1 will start in pitch-black conditions before sunrise. Sunset occurs before 16:30, meaning the final 4 hours are also run in total darkness. A functional, high-output head torch is mandatory for all athletes at the start line and from 16:00 onwards.

• Self-Sufficient Pit Space: A dedicated basecamp area is located directly next to the starting corral. Competitors must bring their own shelters (pop-up gazebos, tents, or tarps) to protect themselves and their kit from the elements.• The Spectator Village: Open and welcome to family, support crews, and teammates. The village will feature hot food, drinks, and sports supplements available on-site to keep athletes fueled and spectators warm.

• Warm Hydration: Hot water and fuel stations will be operational at the end of every lap to manage core temperature and recovery.

WARM & WET KIT STANDARD

Operating for up to 12 hours in British winter conditions requires flawless personal admin. You must come prepared with full wet-weather protection. If your kit fails, your body temperature drops, and your race is over. Every competitor must have access to the following inside their shelter:

• Fully Waterproof Outer Layers: High-quality, taped-seam waterproof jacket and trousers to withstand prolonged rain, snow, or sleet.

• Warm Insulation Layers: Multiple spare fleece, down, or synthetic mid-layers packed inside dry bags.

• Spare Base Layers: Multiple dry change-outs of technical base layers to strip off wet, sweat-soaked clothing immediately between laps.

• Extreme Weather Admin: Spare dry socks, winter hats, gloves, and a thermal flask to keep hot fluids on hand.

£50 Male Load: Minimum 30lb (13.6kg)

£50 Female Load: Minimum 20lb (9.07kg)

Includes official pack hire, weights, timing chip, and winter support.

Pairs Relay Entry

(12-Hour)

£80 Per Team

Partners alternate laps. Active runner wears required gender load (30lb M/ 20lb F).

Spectator - FREE

Full access to the spectator village and the athlete pit areas next to the start/finish line. Access to hot food and vendor stalls.

• The Finisher Custom: While everyone earns the starting patch, those who survive and complete their entire registered duration ( 12 laps) within the hourly cut-offs will achieve ultimate leaderboard ranking and enter a raffle for free entry on the SUMMER event.

• Strict Capacity Notice: Due to tracking constraints and on-site equipment provisioning, athlete spaces are strictly capped at 190 Solos and 30 Teams. No entries will be accommodated once capacity is reached
