The Gormire Gamble is a fell race held in the North York Moors, organised by Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers. It starts and finishes at the Sutton Bank Visitor Centre in the North York Moors National Park (YO7 2EH), and forms part of the Esk Valley Fell Club’s Dave Parry / Lets Run Winter Fell Race Series. The course covers 9km with 250m of climb, and carries FRA classifications of PM (partially marked), NS (navigational skills required), and LK (local knowledge an advantage) — with GPS navigation not permitted. The route descends from the Sutton Bank Visitor Centre down to Gormire Lake before taking in what Alfred Wight — the real-life Yorkshire Vet — called “the finest view in England.”The race is open to adult runners and typically attracts a broad field of fell running clubs from across Yorkshire and beyond. Fields of around 160 runners are common on the start line. Prizes are awarded across age categories including open, senior (U23 included), V40, and five-year bands beyond that, as well as team prizes. The terrain is characteristically demanding for an autumn fell race: the course mixes road and trail with tree branches, roots, and mud, and conditions can be wet, windy, and slippery, particularly later in the season. Runners must carry full FRA mandatory kit including waterproof whole-body cover, hat, gloves, map, compass, and a whistle.
