The story unfolds against the high-stakes backdrop of the Huskers' 1983 national championship pursuit. Jimmy Moriarty is a fatherless 12-year-old boy trying to navigate growing up who discovers a sensitive, personal issue that he believes requires a medical operation. With no father at home to guide him, Jimmy and his tomboy best friend, Frankie, launch a series of funny and desperate money-raising schemes to pay for the procedure. While trying to figure out what it means to become a man, Jimmy looks up to legendary Nebraska Cornhuskers football coach Tom Osborne as a distant mentor, asking himself, "What would Coach do?"
