Join us as we demand the closure of Guantánamo, and, most urgently, 15 men, 3 cleared for release, still remain incarcerated in the U.S. torture camp which will have been in operation for 24 years come January 2026. And now thousands of migrants are being rounded up and sent to Guantánamo...
In 2001, after 9/11, the U.S. government rounded up Muslim men across Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Middle East and North Africa. Most were “bought” for bounties of $5,000; some were tortured in so-called “black sites” controlled by the U.S. military. In early
2002, George Bush opened part of the American-run naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and began building a prison for 800 men he called “the worst of the worst.”
These men were held outside U.S. law, not given the rights of prisoners of war. The CIA developed “new” torture methods to interrogate them, though most knew nothing about the attack of 9/11. (3 have confessed to being involved and have agreed to plead guilty). Most other governments have condemned the U.S. for these unconscionable violations of human rights.
Now, it’s getting worse. Trump has begun to fly migrants rounded up since he took power to Guantanamo, a part of the nation of Cuba which the U.S. controls. Echoing George Bush in 2001, Trump claims they are “the worst of the worst.” To the MAGA
fascists, all immigrants are criminals. To us they are fellow humans with rights.
There’s a sordid history of U.S. detention at Guantanamo. When a reactionary coup in Haiti overthrew Haiti’s president Aristide in 1991, thousands of Haitians fled into the ocean. Rather than providing refuge, the Clinton administration locked up thousands of them in Guantanamo, and then forced most of them back to Haiti. In the early 90’s, people fleeing Cuba were grabbed by the U.S. military from the sea and forced into detention in their own country, rather than being allowed refuge in the U.S.

There are different layers to the answer of why we won’t shut up about closing the U.S. torture camp at Guantanamo.
🌍 on the basis of morality, holding people outside the law is utterly immoral.
🌏 on the grounds of the rights of human beings, the prison gets a score of zero.
🌎 Guantanamo has set a precedent that the most powerful state and military can get away with depriving people of their rights, torture them and face no consequences; rather, such crimes enforce the invincibility of the empire.
