Coinciding with the Yale Peabody Museum exhibition Haiti in the Age of Revolutions: Lafargue Rigaud’s Portraits of Independence (November 9, 2026–March 30, 2027), this conference explores a transformative moment in Haitian and Black New World history through art, portraiture, and cultural history.Featuring rare 19th-century portraits of Haitian revolutionary leaders, including Toussaint Louverture, Jean-Jacques Dessalines, and Henry Christophe, the conference examines the Haitian Revolution, the emergence of Haiti as an independent nation, and the role of image-making in shaping political power, identity, and revolutionary thought across the Americas and Europe.
Held during the exhibition’s opening week, the conference brings new perspectives to Haiti’s revolutionary legacy and 19th-century statecraft.
Friday: 8:30 am - 7:30 pm
Saturday: 9:30 am - 2:30 pm (K-12 educators workshop)
