This exhibition celebrates the 40-year legacy of Stephen Powell’s teaching and his distinguished career as one of America’s leading studio glass artists. Danville has become synonymous with Stephen Powell, who chose to make Centre College and Danville his home for most of his career.
Powell’s lasting influence has helped establish Danville as a hotbed for glass art and as a place where significant and innovative young glass artists are nurtured. What is often overlooked, however, is the profound impact he had on Centre College students and the broader Danville community.
This exhibition celebrates not only his artistic accomplishments, but also his extraordinary local legacy and the connections he has made with generations of students, artists, and community members.
Countless locals can recall having a “Stephen Powell experience” - a class, a conversation, a demonstration, a chance encounter, or a story that has stayed with them. These experiences are part of his enduring legacy.
Powell will continue to live on through the Centre College glass program and in the permanent collection of his artwork at Art Center of the Bluegrass in its GLASS National Art Museum. Together, these institutions and the larger Danville community preserve and carry forward Stephen Powell’s remarkable influence, ensuring that his passion for glass, teaching, and artistic discovery continues to inspire future generations.
