In this workshop, participants will create a 5X7 glass icon in the Romanian tradition. We will use egg tempera (egg yolk plus dried-rock pigments) and participants will choose between different elements to include in their own composition similar to the above, with Mary, the crucifixion, and other saints and motifs as desired. The San Damiano Cross to which St. Francis had a particular devotion could be included as part of the image or the main focus. Icons will be finished off with gold foil background and a copper-tape edge.
Date: Sunday, November 15, 2-5 PM
Location: The Port • 3620 Butler St, 15201
Parking available in the St. Padre Pio parish parking lot on 37th St.
Workshop cost: $40. This includes supplies. Payment can be made by cash, credit or check at the event.
Why Glass Iconography?
Iconography has a long-standing tradition in Christianity of providing a “window to heaven,” both a sacred presence and a reminder to pray. Though traditionally associated with egg tempera paint on wood, a long process that takes at least a week for a small icon, icons have also painted in egg on glass, especially in Romania and Eastern Europe during the 19th and 20th centuries. This was done in family workshops by what we would consider “folk artists,” and so creates an easier tradition to dip into for a 3-3.5 hour workshop. People with no art background and experienced artists alike can come.
