Some stories deserve to be told where they happened.Glasgow Square Theatre is honoured to present Hey Viola!, an inspiring musical celebration of Canadian civil rights trailblazer Viola Desmond. While many Canadians recognize her as the face of Canada's ten-dollar bill, her legacy reaches far beyond that. Viola was a successful entrepreneur, a champion for equality, and a woman whose courage helped shape Canadian history.
In 1946, Viola Desmond refused to leave the whites-only section of New Glasgow's Roseland Theatre. Her courageous stand against racial segregation became one of the defining moments in Canada's civil rights movement. Because these events took place right here in New Glasgow, this performance carries a unique significance for our community, offering audiences the opportunity to reflect on an important chapter of our shared history.
Led by acclaimed performer Krystle Dos Santos, alongside musicians Chris Davis, Steven Charles, and Mary Ancheta, Hey Viola! brings Desmond's remarkable story to life through the powerful music that inspired a generation. Featuring unforgettable songs including A Change is Gonna Come, Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood, Sinnerman, and Mississippi Goddam, this moving cabaret celebrates resilience, courage, and the ongoing pursuit of justice.
Co-created and directed by Tracey Power, whose acclaimed works include Glory, Chelsea Hotel, The Songs of Leonard Cohen, and Miss Shakespeare, Hey Viola! is both deeply personal and profoundly relevant, reminding us that Canada's history continues to shape our present.
Join us for an unforgettable evening as we honour the legacy of Viola Desmond and present a story that belongs to all Canadians—especially here in New Glasgow, where history was made.
