Join Wellington artist Jo Kreyl for a creative workshop inspired by the fascinating world of 17th-century botanical art.Recently, Jo has been exploring her Dutch heritage through research into historical botanical artists. This fascination has led her to the work of Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer, whose 17th-century floral engravings inspired one of her own blue botanical artworks. For this workshop, you’ll receive a limited-edition print of Jo’s blue botanical painting and discover how to transform it by adding delicate gilded insects inspired by the work of Monnoyer’s contemporary, Jan van Kessel, renowned for his detailed depictions of insects and the natural world.
You’ll learn how to apply gold leaf to create shimmering golden details, bringing these tiny creatures to life against the rich blue background. Along the way, Jo will share some of the discoveries from her ongoing exploration of Dutch art and the artists who continue to inspire her.
Come and join Jo on this journey into art, history and the beauty of the natural world, and create your own unique gilded artwork to take home.
No previous experience is necessary. Your limited-edition print and all materials are provided. This event is kindly sponsored by Gordon Harris Wellington.
