Ghost in the Shell (A Frame by Frame Animation Celebration) / Japan / 1995 / Dir: Mamoru Oshi / 83 Min / Current Rotten Tomatoes Score: 95%The mind-melting 1995 anime classic GHOST IN THE SHELL still hits like a cybernetic fist 30 years later. The manga-turned-movie accurately foresaw our 24/7 connected world, and it profoundly impacted sci-fi for decades to come - there would be no THE MATRIX (and so many more) without GHOST IN THE SHELL.
When Section 9 agent Motoko Kusanagi is assigned to track down the hacker known as The Puppet Master, what begins as a standard investigation in near-future Japan quickly turns into something more complex, more bizarre and more existentially thrilling. Amidst all the kick-ass anime action there are deep examinations of the nature of gender, the meaning of identity and a vision of a near-future world that is all too close to our own.
