Behind the ancient walls of Gloucester’s County Gaol lies a history steeped in death, suffering and darkness. Built in the 1700s, the prison was once home to as many as 350 prisoners, each confined within their own separate cell. But it was not simply a place of imprisonment. For generations, it was also a place of execution. Between 1792 and 1864, at least 102 prisoners were put to death within these walls using the infamous ‘New Drop’ gallows — a method considered more humane at the time. But what happened afterwards is perhaps even more unsettling. Many of those executed were buried in unmarked graves within the prison grounds… their names eventually fading from memory, while their remains stayed beneath the very ground you will walk upon. And then there was Ralph Smith. At precisely 7pm on 4th March 1939, Smith became the last prisoner to be hanged at Gloucester. He had been convicted of murdering his girlfriend, Beatrice Baxter, after slitting her throat at the back of Argyle Street in Gloucester. His final footsteps through the prison corridors. The cell where he spent his last hours. The gallows where his life ended. How much of that darkness remains? The prison has also held some of the most notorious criminals connected with Gloucestershire’s history. Among them was Fred West, who was incarcerated here before the full horror of his crimes was uncovered. West was reportedly held in what was then the Vulnerable Prisoners Unit, following his arrest in connection with allegations of abuse involving his daughter. The charges were later dropped, and West walked back out through the prison gates. Whatever happened beyond those gates would eventually become one of the darkest chapters in British criminal history. Tonight, however, we are not simply coming to learn about the past.
