Getting to Know the Shoreline: A Sensory Intertidal Walk

A guided November nature walk exploring seasonal changes, the sensations of the intertidal, and our relationships with a changing coastline.
About this Event

About this event

What can the shoreline teach us when we slow down and deeply listen?

Our shorelines are always changing. Each season brings different sights, sounds, and rhythms to the intertidal, from shifting tides and weather to the plants, animals and other living things that make their homes along the coast.

As our climate changes, paying attention to these everyday transformations takes on new meaning. How do we notice change in familiar places? What can seasonal rhythms teach us about the coast? And how do we apply these lessons to our lives in the climate chaos and social upheaval of our time?

Join nature-based facilitator Lynden Parry and kelp biologist Maisie Roy-Musor for a guided shoreline walk inviting us to explore these questions together.

We'll slow down, get curious, and experience the shoreline through our senses. Along the way, we'll learn about coastal ecology, share observations, and make space for the memories, feelings, and questions that arise.

Early winter is an often neglected but fascinating time for the curious observer! The land and sea are alive as organisms experience new life stages guided by the change in the seasons and the beginning of the winter storms.

Whether you're a lifelong coastal explorer or someone who rarely finds time to visit the shore, this is an opportunity to discover something new about a familiar place, spend time outdoors, and connect with others in our coastal community.

No prior knowledge or experience is needed. Everyone is welcome!

What to expect

- A relaxed, guided exploration of the shoreline and intertidal ecosystem

- Opportunities to learn about seasonal changes in coastal ecology

- Invitations to notice the sights, sounds, textures, and rhythms of the shore

- Space to reflect on our experiences, memories, and emotions about changing coastal landscapes

- Time to connect and share observations with other participants

What to bring

November on the coast can be chilly and wet! Please dress for the weather, wear sturdy footwear suitable for uneven and/or slippery surfaces, and bring a rain jacket.

Accessibility:

We will be walking along uneven, rocky, and slippery terrain in the intertidal zone. There is an incline to get down to the intertidal area at Clover Point. We will walk for approximately half an hour with time on either end gathered in a circle to share. Camp chairs will be available. A written list of guiding prompts will be provided to all participants at the beginning of the event. Accessible, all-gender public bathrooms are available at Clover Point. Feel free to bring any tools that will support your participation (a journal, fidget toys, art supplies etc.)

Important safety information: As this event takes place beside the water during the winter season, all participants will be required to sign a liability waiver before taking part in the walk.

Land Acknowledgement:

This event takes place on the unceded territory of the lək̓ʷəŋən (Lekwungen) people, the Songhees and Kosapsum First Nations. A small village site sat at the base of míqәn (“warmed by the sun,” Beacon Hill Park) as recently as 300 years ago. lək̓ʷəŋən people have stewarded these lands and waters since time immemorial: planting camas meadows, reef net fishing, and managing the landscape through controlled burns.

We invite you to keep an eye out for signs of the Lekwungen people’s continual stewardship of these lands and waters as we walk the shoreline. We also encourage you to take action to be in right relationship with this place and its people, including by supporting Indigenous-led restoration projects like the W̱SÁNEĆ Nation’s Clam Garden Restoration Project and Cheryl Bryce’s lək̓ʷəŋən Community Toolshed.

About the series

This event is presented in partnership with the University of Victoria’s Sustainability Project as part of Georgia Strait Alliance's Climate Justice Dialogue series.

Through conversations, workshops, and shared experiences, the series brings people together to explore our relationships with the Salish Sea, build community connections, and imagine more just and resilient coastal futures.
